Things You Can Do To Support Sexual Violence Survivors

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairperson of the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) Livia Istania DF Iskandar said the recovery process for survivors of sexual violence must be accompanied by full social support.

“The support system is very important. If survivors live in an environment that is not supportive or an environment that blames the victim, of course, the recovery process will be longer," said Livia as quoted by Antara, Sunday, September 5.

She said when survivors have the courage to speak up about their case, listeners should not judge and judge because everyone's psychological response has a different level of complexity.

“When she needs someone to talk to, we can accompany her. Or accompany her when she needs help from a psychologist. Accompany her during her recovery journey. Don't be the judge. Never compare it with other people. Often times, words can actually hurt,” explained Livia.

She also mentioned that when survivors report cases of sexual violence to law enforcement, the reports should have been received first.

"In my opinion, those who receive the report are not in a position to become judges, yes, they should be able to accept it," said the woman who is an active coach at the Pulih Foundation.

"It's not easy being a survivor who dares to report, not to mention if you speak up on social media there is a threat of the ITE Law," she added.

Livia revealed that the recovery process for each survivor is different, but in general it can be seen through two factors, namely risk factors and protective factors.

A victim of sexual violence who is at greater risk is likely to find it more difficult to become an empowered survivor. Conversely, a victim who has more protection and is stronger, that person will be easier to become a defenseless survivor.

"In some places, support groups or groups of survivors are usually provided who can strengthen each other with what they have experienced and what makes them rise," she added.

“Recovery basically starts with yourself. Can she accept and be herself, can she overcome the anger and hatred that is wrestling inside her, and is she willing to seek counseling with a psychologist,” said Livia.

She emphasized that cases of sexual violence are complex issues. Broader social support is urgently needed, including improving the legal system and recovery system so that survivors are brave enough to report their cases and get justice.

“The state needs to be present in protection and recovery. The Bill on the Elimination of Sexual Violence that has been initiated is indeed more comprehensive, so it does not only emphasize punishment for perpetrators but also on how to recover the survivors," she said.

She added that the process of organizing and rebuilding the lives of survivors is part of the right to recovery that must be obtained.

"Therefore, LPSK is also present to provide protection so that a victim-witness can give a statement safely and comfortably during the criminal process," concluded Livia.
