JAKARTA - The Chinese drama, The Ferryman: The Legends of Nanyang will start airing August 24. This drama tells the story of a brave duo, Xia Dong Qing (Lawrence Wong) and Zhao Li (Qi Yuwu), who help curious spirits settle their affairs in the mortal world.

This drama can be watched starting on August 24, 2021 every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 19:00 WIB through the iQiyi application and the iq.com website. There are several reasons that make this drama interesting to watch.

1. Adapted from the Soul Ferry Franchise

This drama is adapted from the popular Soul Ferry franchise. A young man named Xia Dong Qing (Lawrence Wong) and Ferry Man named Zhao Li (Qi Yu Wu) help the spirits who have been lost in the human world for a long time to settle their affairs there. Xia Dong Qing had been able to see and communicate with spirits since she was a child, but it turned out that her abilities brought her a lot of trouble.

2. The First Supernatural Drama

The Ferryman: The Legends of Nanyang is a supernatural genre drama that was first produced by iQiyi. In addition, this is also the first time Lawrence Wong has played supernatural horror.

"I'm actually very interested in playing horror films, when I got a casting opportunity, I immediately accepted it," he said, Friday, August 20.

The Xia Dong Qing he plays also has a unique character because he can see ghosts since childhood. Lawrence Wong wanted to challenge himself to try a genre he had never done before.

"I am intrigued by the character of people who can see ghosts. He has strong feelings for the living and the dead. He has a deep sense of helping the dead to move on," he explained.

Even though it is a supernatural horror genre, this Chinese drama does not only rely on jump scares, aka scenes that make the audience shocked and scared.

"This drama is not to scare you but to take you to a story about having a story that has its own meaning. I think the most interesting thing about this drama is that each episode does not only provide a jump scare but every spirit in the episode has its own story," said Lawrence Wong.

"I was reminded of many things in life that I forgot because I was busy at work. Following this gave me a valuable experience," he said.

Qi Yuwu who plays Zhao Li has his own reasons why this drama is interesting to watch. He claimed to be afraid of mystical things, but ventured to watch it.

"Actually I stay away from mystical things because I am afraid. But what happens in this drama is different from real life. I want to try new things, this drama is complete from love, friendship, family. This is the most interesting and makes me want to participate in the drama this," he explained.

5. Combination of three country actors

There are many Malaysian and Singaporean drama artists who play in this drama. That's why iQiyi called this project the first project in the Southeast Asia region.

The Ferryman: The Legends of Nanyang also stars Kate Kinney from Malaysia. He had to shoot for 5 months in China for this drama. "When I was in Malaysia I questioned whether I could do it. I was there for 5 months filming, after meeting all of them it really helped me to act and live in a foreign country," he recalls.

He also shared his first impression of meeting Lawrence Wong from Singapore, who had already had a career in China. "I'm afraid to work with all the cast in this because they are famous and have a lot of qualified experience, I'm a new person so I think it's stressful," he said.

"I thought at first Lawrence Wong would not talk to me because he was very famous. But I remember he was the first to talk to me when doing makeup. I thought what to say, but it turned out that our conversation was very smooth," she said.
