Endometriosis Will Subside Or Disappear When Women Are Menopausal

JAKARTA - Obstetrics and gynecology specialist consultant fertility, endocrinology, and reproduction from the Indonesian Obstetrics and Gynecology Association (POGI), Andon Hestiantoro, said that endometriosis in postmenopausal women (menopausal) will subside or disappear.

Diseases that are dependent or influenced by the hormone estrogen are generally experienced by women of childbearing age, when hormones are in abundance. In children, endometriosis is usually asymptomatic because it is not yet puberty, estrogen has not increased.

"In postmenopausal women, the hormone estrogen is already lower. It is possible that some endometriosis will subside or disappear after menopause," he said in a health webinar, quoted by Antara, Monday, June 14.

Endometriosis which often causes symptoms of severe pain during menstruation in the abdomen and infertility can actually be treated by using drugs that do not suppress low estrogen hormones such as in menopause conditions (below 30 pg/ml) or even allow high levels (above 50 pg/ml). .

The hormone estrogen needs to be maintained in a balanced level. If it is very low it can cause bone loss, while if it is too high it can trigger endometriosis to grow and recur.

Surgical procedures are actually also included in the treatment of this disease, but are limited in nature when the condition of endometriosis interferes with other organs such as the intestines, kidneys, bladder, makes it difficult to urinate and has intense intercourse.

"Or it doesn't heal, it can be operated on. But if you can use medicine, then we can prevent endometriosis from being operated on again and again," said Andon.

Repeated surgery actually triggers the recurrence of endometriosis about 30-50 percent. Within a year, the risk of relapse can be 30 percent and increase to 50 percent in two years so that surgery is needed again.

On the other hand, several studies have shown that surgery on endometriosis has risks for ovarian reserve. Exacoustos et al (2004) study showed that excision of endometriomas has been shown to reduce ovarian volume.
