JAKARTA - Actor Idris Elba seems to still want to be involved in the James Bond film. After being long touted as a candidate for 007 agent, the British actor is now opening up the opportunity to appear as a villain in the new Bond film.
According to a report by The Mirror, quoted on Friday, May 22, Elba, 53, feels that the chances of becoming James Bond are now getting smaller. Amazon MGM Studios is said to be looking for a new lead actor in his 30s.
However, the Luther star is still interested in entering the 007 film series. Not as Bond, but as his main enemy.
When asked if he was interested in becoming a Bond villain, Elba covered his face with his hand and replied cautiously.
"If I say yes, it will haunt me for hours," Elba said.
However, he finally gave a clear answer.
"Yes, I mean 100 percent. Bond is a very iconic film series. Why not? You can do scenes petting cats and so on," he said, quoted by The Mirror.
The remark was a reference to Bond's classic villains, including Blofeld, 007's arch-nemesis who is synonymous with cats.
The new James Bond project is now moving. Director Denis Villeneuve is said to be looking for a new cast to replace the previous generation.
Elba has been on the list of James Bond candidates for almost a decade. However, age factors make his chances even smaller if the studio really wants a younger actor.
Even so, the road to the Bond world is not completely closed. Elba has just been involved in Masters of the Universe for Amazon Studios. He hinted that the opportunity could be open because Bond is now under the control of the same studio.
"It's the same studio. We're in," he said.
In Masters of the Universe, Elba plays Man-At-Arms Duncan. He admitted that he was happy because the project was close to his childhood memories.
"I feel like part of this is to do with my nostalgia of playing with these toys," Elba told Fox 11.
He also praised director Travis Knight who said he wanted to stay true to the original material, including the cartoon feel, animation, sound, and music.
According to Elba, Knight did not see Duncan's role from the color of his skin, but rather from the character that could be brought to life.
"For him, it's not about that. It's about finding a character in the figure of Duncan that he can bring to life," Elba said.
Elba also told Knight that he put the original character toy in his place. He even compared his mustache to the two versions of the Man-At-Arms toy.
"It really was like a dream come true," he said.
