JAKARTA - A man who has a sister is often considered a green flag in a romantic relationship. Green flag is a term used for positive behavior in relationships, such as being communicative, supportive, and responsible.

Experts say that the presence of a big sister can influence the formation of a man's character. Big sisters often play a role as a figure who instills a sense of respect from an early age.

"Truly natural caring attitudes are often shaped by older sisters who demand a certain standard from the start," licensed couples therapist Nari Jeter, LMFT, quoted from Self Magazine, Friday, December 19, 2025.

Simple habits such as being on time, being polite, or being sensitive to the needs of others are often shown by older sisters. The sign is realized, this forms a green flag behavior that is carried into adulthood by his younger brother, especially in romantic relationships.

Men with older sisters will also tend to be more empathetic to women's life experiences. They are more aware of the emotional realities that women often face.

"Younger brothers who are close to their older sisters usually have a deeper sense of respect and appreciation for women's life experiences," says licensed therapist, Erin Runt, LMFT.

They will be used to hearing stories about heartbreak, discrimination, and biological challenges such as menstruation experienced by women. This exposure becomes the foundation for younger brothers to form green flag behavior, because empathy is not built from theory, but through everyday experiences.

One of the characteristics of the green flag men who are often sought in romantic relationships is the ability to show emotions in a healthy way. In the toxic masculinity culture of men, they often suppress feelings.

However, the presence of a big sister can be a counterbalance. Big sisters tend not to punish their younger brothers for crying or expressing feelings, which shapes their personalities to be more open, non-defensive, and able to be emotionally present for romantic relationships.

"This creates a safe space, where showing emotion is not seen as a weakness, but rather a human thing," Jeter concluded.
