JAKARTA - In recent years, the concept of mindfulness or full awareness has been increasingly applied in many aspects, including education. This approach encourages students to be fully present in the process of learning, recognizing emotions, and building empathy and calm.

Amid the increasing academic pressure and social challenges, mindfulness practices can be an important bridge to balance intellectual intelligence and emotional well-being.

One of the educational institutions that consistently apply this principle is the Global Sevilla School, which has just marked 23 years of Mindfulness-Based Learning travel through the celebration of 23rd Anniversary of Christmasis and Day of Mindfulness 2025. The event took place at the Pulo Mas Campus, East Jakarta, recently with the theme From Whale to Purpose, Living Life by Design.

This celebration was attended by the Minister of Secondary Education, Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu'ti, M.Ed., together with Gogot Suharwoto, S.Pd., M.Ed., Ph.D. as Director General of Early Childhood Education, as well as Rita Pranawati and Sifa Lutfhiyani as Experts of the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education. Also present were the founders of schools, ranks of leaders, teachers, students, and parents.

In addition to being a momentum for school age commemoration, this activity also emphasizes Global Sevilla's commitment to practicing mindfulness-based holistic education in line with the policy direction of Deep Learning from the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The Minister of Secondary Education, Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu'ti, M.Ed., in his speech expressed his appreciation for the mindfulness practices implemented by educational institutions.

"The approach to mindfulness which is practiced here is in line with the national agenda of Deep Learning to create a learning atmosphere that is aware, meaningful, and encouraging. We welcome this practice contribution in supporting the transformation of quality education for all," he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Michael Thia, Superintendent Global Sevilla School, explained that mindfulness is not just a theory, but is part of his daily learning routine.

A number of mindfulness practices are integrated in daily activities, ranging from morning reflection sessions, teaching approaches, to interactions between students.

"Through this method, we not only educate to be academically intelligent, but also help students become self-aware, empathetic, and able to manage themselves," he explained.

In strengthening the implementation of mindfulness in class, the school presents a special session with Asheena Baez, an international certified Mindfulness Leadership coach.

Learning in this practice is presented as a solution to the low achievement of HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) for Indonesian students based on the results of the PISA survey.

A holistic approach that raises awareness, meaning, and joy through a balance of thought, heart, taste, and exercise, is the basis for forming a whole generation: belief, critical thinking, creative, independent, healthy, capable of collaborating, good citizens, and communicating with empathy.

"Mindfulness is not just a relaxation technique, but life skills that help students and teachers deal with the dynamics of the times in a calm, focused, and empathetic manner," said Asheena.
