Demonstrations Become Social Highlights, Parental Care Patterns Determine How Teenagers Respond To Political Issues

JAKARTA - Demonstrations are part of a legitimate practice of democracy, because it provides space for people to express opinions and fight for their aspirations.

However, when the action led to anarchic acts and involved minors to teenagers, the problem became more complex.

Parental parenting is said to have an important role in shaping children's attitudes, including the way they address developing social and political issues.

The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) emphasizes the importance of family assistance so that children understand the risks of involvement in uncontrolled actions.

"I urge parents to provide understanding to children about the situation of this demonstration, so that children avoid potential dangers that threaten their safety when the situation is out of control," said KPAI member Maria Apituley, as quoted by ANTARA.

Apart from parents, the role of teachers and schools is also considered crucial. Badminton asked that democratic and socio-political education be given in the right and proportional way.

"Give children a safe and comfortable discussion space so that they develop the right understanding and have a clear space for opinion at school about the current situation and political escalation, as well as its impact on the lives of children today and in the future," he said.

Previously, the tragedy in last week's demonstration showed how vulnerable children were if they were directly involved in the riots. Data shows 10 people died, including a 16-year-old student with the initials ALF from Tigaraksa, Tangerang Regency, Banten.

ALF was treated at Dr. Mintohardjo Hospital Jakarta since August 29 before he died on September 1. He is suspected of participating in demonstrations in the DPR/MPR RI area which led to chaos.

In addition, it was recorded that 20 children were injured in riots in various areas. They are currently still undergoing intensive treatment at the hospital.
