JAKARTA - Damar Rizal Marzuki, son of veteran actor Epy Kusnandar, apparently never aspired to follow in his father's footsteps in the world of theater.

In an interview, Damar revealed that he tried to avoid the major when he entered the Jakarta Arts Institute (IKJ), but fate had other plans and led him to become "addicted" to it, leading him to become a lecturer and Head of the Study Program.

Initially, Damar had interests in various other arts fields, from cinematography to music.

"I didn't enter IKJ with the intention of majoring in theater. They often said IKJ was the successor to Mr. Epy Kusnandar. In fact, my main goal was to study anywhere, as long as it was art, but not theater," Damar Rizal Marzuki said in the Jakarta area on Monday, August 18.

His life path began to change when he often accompanied his father on filming. From there, he was advised to study theater to build his self-confidence.

"In the end, I watched filming every day, and then I was told to go to theater first to build my confidence... So, I went to theater to open that up," he recalled.

What initially was simply a decision to simply "rather than not go to college" turned into an addiction.

"Then I came here because, rather than not going to college, I diligently attended, and then I became addicted to theater. I didn't even go home to my boarding house. I slept, and I became a flexible theater resident," he said.

Now, he is not only active as an actor and director, but also serves as the Head of the Theater Production Study Program at his alma mater.
