Working On Jumbo Movies Up To 5 Years, Director Ryan Adriandhy: Just Like Playing Lego As A Child

JAKARTA - The director of the animated film Jumbo, Ryan Adriandhy, told of his journey to finish the film which is now successfully watched by more than 10 million viewers. He worked on the film to spend five years. He seemed to have played the same path as playing the lego.

"Just like playing a lego. Building a Jumbo is like assembling a Lego, there is already a big vision, but there are many pieces that have to be adjusted to real challenges. Not infrequently, when writing scenarios, ideas develop from spontaneous interactions with voice actors. There is a moment when the actor's appearance makes me change one scene. Because it turns out, in the creative process, the best things often come from things that are not planned," he said at the opening event Lego Playground in the South Jakarta area, recently.

Ryan, who admits that he likes to be in the role of a lego since the age of four, interprets playing not as an empty activity, but as a creative process that trains persistence, flexibility, and vision.

"Sometimes playing is only considered as entertainment. But through Lego and this campaign, we want to remind that playing can be a path to big dreams as long as you are accompanied, directed, and enjoyed by the process," he continued.

He admitted that he learned many things from the world of play, including when he had to 'play the mood' of children voicing Jumbo in the studio. Instead of just sitting and working, Ryan often let them run, draw, or even play Lego first.

"Only after they relax and feel happy, we start the recording process. Because children need a play-driven approach, not a command-driven approach," he said.

Ryan sees a parallel between assembling Lego and making animated films. This principle he applied during the Jumbo production process which took five years. He does not pursue technical perfection alone, but rather a fun and meaningful creative process.

We have a vision to make a house, for example. But it turns out that the SECONDs are incomplete. We can stress, or we can adapt. And sometimes, the final result is even better than the initial plan. Because from the start the mindset is playing, of course we are happy, we are flexible, we are exploratory," he concluded.
