Luca, Casarosa's Tribute On How A Child Finds The Process Of Self Development

JAKARTA - Disney Pixar released the trailer for their latest animated film, Luca, on Wednesday, April 28. This film is highly anticipated by Disney fans considering that this is the first film by director Enrico Casarosa.

Set in the Riviera, Italy, Luca tells the story of a 13-year-old named Luca (voiced by Jacob Tremblay) and his best friend, Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer).

Both are sea creatures who become humans when they arrive on land. They try various things humans do, from eating pasta, riding scooters while hiding their identities.

In the trailer, they are seen enjoying their time as humans. Even though they have faced difficult situations several times, these two friends help each other.

When the trailer was released for the first time, many netizens compared Luca's premise with the film Call Me By Your Name.

This Luca Guadagnino-directed film tells the story of Oliver (Armie Hammer) and Elio (Timothee Chalamet) who have a romantic relationship while in Italy.

The photos show scenes comparing Luca to Elio and Alberto to Oliver. Launching ET Canada, Casarosa replied that the story about LGBT never crossed his mind when creating Luca.

In recent times, Disney fans have often asked for representations of LGBT characters in their films. This was answered through the film Onward (2020) which featured a gay character (Lena Waithe).

Inspiration

Enrico Casaraso explained that Luca's film was inspired by his own life. "Luca is about my best friend, Alberto."

At that time he was a shy person until he met Alberto, his friend who was free and not restrained by his family. His friendship with Alberto was both beautiful and wonderful.

Their relationship is not something romantic, but Casarosa calls this relationship an emotional one. The figure of Luca is looking for an identity outside of life with family.

This film is a presentation by Casarosa about how a child finds the process of self-development.

“The flip side of being a child is that you always feel like you are isolated. My friends and I felt like losers when we left… and I love how sea creatures are a beautiful metaphor for feeling the difference. ”

Enrico Casarosa made his debut with a short film with Pixar titled La Luna. The animation style he brought in the film Luca.

In addition to the two main characters, Luca starred Maya Rudolph, Emma Berman, Marco Barricelli, and Jim Gaffigan.

Luca is Pixar's newest release to celebrate 25 years of the founding of Disney Pixar. Following in Soul's footsteps, the film will premiere exclusively on Disney + on June 18.
