Thanks To Emilia Perez, Karla SofECTed Gasc To Be The First Transgender Artist To Be Nominated By Oscar

JAKARTA - Emilia Perez's film dominates the Oscar 2025 nomination with 13 categories. One of the categories obtained was Best Actress in a Leading Role obtained by Karla Sofia Gascon.

With this acquisition, Karla Sofia Gascon became the first transgender actor to receive an Oscar nomination. In the film Emilia Perez, she plays Emilia, a drug dealer who is assisted by a lawyer to fake her death and perform gender change operations.

This is not the first history Gascon has made thanks to this film, because he is also the first transgender actress to win Best Actress at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. He won with Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz.

Gascon juga menjadi transpuan pertama yang mendapat nominasi di Golden Globes. Aktingnya dalam film ini mendapat respons yang positif.

Throughout Oscar's history, only three transgender actors were nominated, namely composer Angela Morley, musician Anohni, director of Yance Ford. Elliot Page was nominated for Juno before he became transgender in 2020.

Before acting on the big screen, Karla Sofia Gascon was mostly involved in the world of telenovela where she played various titles.

Through his Instagram account, Gascon uploaded a photo of himself and wrote, Thank you @TheAcademy.

Apart from Gascon, his co-star - Zoe Saldana also received a nomination for Supporting Actress. He thanked The Academy.

"I'm really honored and proud for this nomination. Thank you for considering me for this award. I feel proud among the talents," wrote Zoe Saldana.

"Emilia Perez is made with love. Thank you to @TheAcademy and the members who pay attention to our hard work. Jacques!!! BINGO!," wrote Saldana.
