JAKARTA - James Gunn's latest Superman film will feature a scene inspired by the film Top Gun: Maverick. The director will bring the superhero back to the big screen next year, with David Corenswet playing Man of Steel.
Gunn revealed that he was inspired by Tom Cruise's 2022 aviation blockbuster film to use drones to create action scenes in the air.
"Taking pictures in the sky is very difficult. So, we learned a lot from films like Top Gun: Maverick," said Gunn, quoted by VOI from the CNA Lifestyle page on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
"We recorded many action scenes using drones flying around Superman and the people involved in the scene, such as The Engineer and whoever is battling him in the air," he continued.
"We did it on the sound stage with a very sophisticated little drone. We have some of the best drone pilots in the world working with us."
Gunn also talked about Superman's iconic costume and revealed that his version was inspired by professional wrestlers.
"We tried various versions of costumes, in shorts and without shorts. One of the things David said was that Superman wanted the children not to be afraid of him. He was an alien with incredible power, could shoot light from his eyes. He was a very strong figure and could be considered scary, but he wanted people to like him. He wanted to be a symbol of hope and positive things," he said.
"So she dresses like a professional wrestler. She dresses in a way that makes people not afraid of her, which shows hope and positive energy. And that really makes sense to me," he continued.
This latest Superman film also features Nicholas Hoult as Superman's arch-enemy, Lex Total. Gunn previously promised that this film would be different from previous stories about the comic hero. He developed a villain who was really scary and would make the audience worry about Superman's fate.
"I don't think we've ever seen Lex like Nick's roles. Nick intimidates. You'll think, oh, sorry Superman," Gunn said while talking on the Happy Sad Converted podcast.
"That's something we've never seen before, especially in movies. Sometimes in comics, you think, 'Oh, Superman is in big trouble,' because Lex is very smart and great at what he does," he continued.

Gunn says in this film, people usually think, 'Lex will lose'. This time, Lex is someone who doesn't want to be fought.
However, Gunn also promised that Superman would remain ' quite family friendly'. He spoke about DC universe as a whole to MovieZine.
"Everything will be very different. We have something relatively serious like Superman, then something relatively comedy like Peacemaker, all in the same universe," he said.
"Or something very mature like Peacemaker, and something quite family-friendly like Superman." he continued.
