JAKARTA - Health expert from Samarinda Medika Citra Hospital, Andrew Saniang explained the importance of understanding how to prevent back pain due to hernia nuclei pulposus (HNP) or better known as pinch nerve.

"Although HNP cannot always be prevented, the risk can be reduced by preventive measures, such as swimming, sitting upright, and lifting the load in the right position, it is also important to pay attention to," Andrew explained in Samarinda, Sunday.

He continued that maintaining ideal weight so as not to put extra pressure on the spine is also a good preventive measure.

Andrew also reminded to quit smoking, as smoking can reduce oxygen supply to spinal pads.

"If work requires sitting for a long time, stand up and do stretching regularly," he said.

HNP, said Andrew, occurs due to rupture of joint pads that protect the lumbar bone. This broken pading causes the core of the joints to come out and clamp the nerves around it.

"It's like pillows, if the contents come out, the shape changes and it's uncomfortable. Likewise the joint pads on the spine," he explained.

He explained that several factors could lead to HNP. Clashes in the spinal area due to an accident can cause a rupture of joint bearings.

In addition, the wrong sitting or standing position over the long term can also trigger HNP. Lifting a heavy load with the wrong position can also cause a spinal cord injury and lead to a narrow nerve.

According to him, HNP can have various impacts, such as pain is the most common symptom. The level of pain varies, ranging from mild to severe.

"Squeezed strains can cause weakness in certain muscles, depending on the location of the affected nerves. In severe cases, HNP can cause paralysis," he said.

Andrew also emphasized the importance of immediately contacting the doctor if the symptoms of HNP worsened, paralyzed in the leg, the anus felt pain, difficulty urinating or bowel movements, and sudden weakness of muscles.

"HNP can be handled using various methods, ranging from physical therapy to surgery. Immediately consult to the nearest health facility to get the right treatment," said Andrew.
