Godzilla Vs. Kong Becomes The Best Paid Film During The COVID-19 Pandemic

JAKARTA - Godzilla vs. Kong became the best pandemic film at the overseas box office with a total of $ 121.8 million at the time of opening, giving Hollywood films hope that their flagship film can return to glory when theaters open.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Monday, March 29, previously Christopher Nolan's film Tenet became the film with the biggest opening at the start of the pandemic, earning $ 53 million.

However, the collaboration between the two studios Legendary and Warner Bros. with his monster film was able to set a new record in China, where when it was launched immediately earned $ 70.3 million.

Legendary has sole distribution and marketing assignments in China, while Warner handles elsewhere.

The film is also quite strong in the regions of Mexico, Australia and Russia. Overall, Godzilla vs. Kong is on par with Kong: Skull Island and way ahead of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Godzilla vs. Kong launched in a total of 39 markets, although the film didn't open in Japan until May. Imax cinema managed to sell tickets for $ 12.4 million over the weekend and this is the best opening since December 2019.

The film won't be released in North America until March 31.

In China, the Adam Wingard-directed film controls 82 percent of the market share and scored the biggest opening for a foreign film since 2019. It also opens the equivalent of the last installment, Godzilla vs. King of the Monsters at $ 70.6 million.

Godzilla vs. Kong also had the best opening during a pandemic in other countries including Mexico which generated $ 6.3 million. Australia made the same $ 6.3 million over gross revenue for Godzilla vs. King of the Monsters and Russia earned $ 5.8 million.

Taiwan opened with $ 5.2 million and marked as the second-largest opening for a Warner Bros. release behind Aquaman. Meanwhile, India marked the third-largest opening after Batman v Superman and The Nun with $ 4.8 million.
