JAKARTA - Production designer for the original Marvel WandaVision series, Mark Worthington, revealed his challenge in combining elements of the sitcom and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the short series.

"Combining the sitcom and MCU elements into one production is quite challenging, but also fun for me", Worthington told Antara in a virtual interview on Thursday.

"Creating a production design for an American television sitcom requires effort, moreover, it has to match and highlight the characteristics of a US sitcom from decade to decade", he added.

Furthermore, Worthington said, he and his team did a lot of research on the US sitcom series so that it could be delivered properly on today's screens.

"Apart from research, we also re-watched a lot of old series. It was really fun to be able to go back through time and then integrate it into the world and the Marvel universe. I was really excited when I saw the results!", Worthington said.

Worthington himself is a production designer and art director known through various popular American series, such as Ugly Betty (2006), American Horror Story (2011), and The Umbrella Academy (2019). He is also a nominee for an Emmy Awards and has won the Art Directors Guild several times.

When he was asked about his favorite genre to work on, Worthington said he wanted to try many genres to explore.

"I've tried many genres, from comedy to sci-fi, and I always want to do something different every time. I'm really excited for that", he said.

Closing the interview, Worthington shared advice for young Indonesian filmmakers who want to pursue a career as a production designer.

"The main advice, in my opinion, is to watch a lot of films and television series. And considering that you are Indonesian, watch and support local films, learn about the culture and incorporate that element into your project", said Worthington.

"I believe you will all be successful filmmakers when you believe and start from your own 'world' first", he concluded.
