According to his biography on the Discovery Go website, McGlashan is a seventh-generation fisherman who grew up not far from Dutch Harbor on the island of Akutan, Alaska.

"It is named after his great uncle Nick McGlashan, who worked on the first ship that is said to have started the US crab industry, the F / V Deep Sea, which was built in 1947," the biography reads.
