JAKARTA - The animated film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train was asked to become the highest grossing film of all time in Japan beating Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away which was released in 2001.

With the acquisition of 313.7 million US dollars, the film Demon Slayer successfully displaced Spirited Away which won 305 million US dollars.

Since its release on October 16, Demon Slayer has earned $ 100 million in 10 days. This success made this film shown on more than 379 cinema screens throughout October to December.

The absence of Hollywood films in theaters has made Japanese people flock to watch local releases. So far only Tenet and Parasite films have hit the Japanese box office.

Demon Slayer is a revival of the Japanese film industry. Various knick-knacks and things related to Demon Slayer were sold in the market.

The comic Demon Slayer was first released in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in February 2016 and sold 120 million copies. Then, the series that aired on Netflix also went viral.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train tells of a boy who takes revenge after all family members are killed by monsters and his younger brother turns into the monster.

The film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train will air internationally including in Indonesia starting January 6, 2021.
