JAKARTA - Something from a very distant galaxy has appeared in Bristol, it seems. Its power is immense, as a statue of Darth Vader mysteriously appeared overnight, a few days after the star who played the iconic character, Dave Prowse, passed away.

A 1 foot tall statue of the Star Wars villain has been installed on the pedestal of the empty former Edward Colston statue.

Protesters toppled the Colston statue earlier this year for going against anti-slavery values. They then threw the statue into the port.

The tribute to Prowse comes just days after the actor who played Lord Vader in the films and was born in Bristol, died of illness.

A petition is also being prepared asking for a statue of the actor - who started his career as a bodybuilder before moving to London to pursue a career as an actor - to be placed on Colston's pole. So far, the petition has drawn more than 450 signatures.

The petition for Vader 's permanent tribute reads: “In today's society when there is so much debate about the statue being erected, replaced or removed, it is a great opportunity for Bristol's citizens to unite to acquire this statue erected from the great David Prowse Bristol.

“The portrayal of this man as Darth Vader has touched the lives of millions of people around the world and still does today!

"To forget this man would be a disgrace considering what he accomplished for Bristol."

With the distinctive pose of striking Vader with his left hand up and reaching out, as if using force, it is unclear who is responsible for the statue's installation.
