JAKARTA - Original film franchises are rarely found in contemporary cinema, especially those experiencing exponential growth such as John Wick. Each of the three films enjoyed success, the trilogy being the one that earned significantly more revenue with each entry.
Most recently, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum made $ 326 million worldwide, versus $ 89 million from the first film. With that growth rate, it's no surprise that a spinoff series entitled The Continental is in the works.
There hasn't been much word on The Continental since its announcement last year. It's only news that Lionsgate will release the series on the Starz network in the future.
Luckily in an interview at the Television Critics Awards, Starz CEO Jeffery Hirsch provided the latest news at the time of the event's release. He said the series would come some time after the screening of John Wick Chapter 4 in 2021.
"I had a meeting yesterday. We love a bunch of writers, and we try to get them in the right place so they don't interfere with the film. This (film) will air sometime after the fourth [John Wick] film, "Hirsch said, launching Screengeek, Friday, January 17.
While this is sad news for audiences, having had to wait at least a full year for the show to be released, the series based in the world of John Wick is very appetizing.
Continental has been a hot spot throughout the John Wick films, playing almost as a hideout for the world's best assassin. This TV series that explores the exciting possibilities of Continental functionality can attract huge interest, with or without star Keanu Reeves present.
It will be interesting to see which John Wick series ended up appearing in a TV series and how big of a role it was given.
