Evelyn Quan (Michelle Yeoh) is a Chinese-American woman who runs a boring laundry business. With her husband, Waymond (Ke Huy Quan), their lives have always been uneventful.

Evelyn and Waymond also have a child named Joy (Stephanie Hsu). Despite being an only child, Joy experiences disappointment with her parents as she gets older.

One day, Evelyn's father, Gong Gong (James Hong) arrives in the United States. They plan to celebrate their father's birthday there. Prior to the celebration, Evelyn and Waymond were asked to the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) Building.

Their laundry business is being audited by the IRS. Evelyn and Waymond also meet Deirdre Beaubeirdre (Jamie Lee Curtis) to see their business audit process.

In an instant, Waymond warns Evelyn to take care of herself because there is another multiverse to come. Waymond says Evelyn might be the only person who can save the mess.
