JAKARTA - Director Denis Villeneuve plans to make the Dune universe bigger in his upcoming sequel, than he did in 2021's first installment.

Quoted from Variety, Thursday, March 17, the director also confirmed that the screenplay for the Dune sequel was mostly completed. Villeneuve and cinematographer Greig Fraser shot some of the scenes in "Dune" using an IMAX camera, and they'll be doing it again in "Dune: Part Two" to an expected greater degree.

"Greig Fraser and I, we fell in love with this format, and there will definitely be — maybe even more — IMAX footage in this film. Definitely," Villeneuve said as quoted by ANTARA.

"The screenplay is mostly finished, but always a work in progress," Villeneuve added of the sequel. "It will be a work in progress until the final cut, but I would say it's been solid. I have a script in my hands. We are in preparation now. My crew, we are in full preparation for this film."

Villeneuve was finishing the script for "Dune: Part Two" while on the Oscar circuit for "Dune," which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards. Even though Villeneuve didn't make it into the director's category, he's still running for an Oscar thanks to best picture and adaptation screenplay nominations.

"Dune: Part 2" will reunite Villeneuve with the cast of Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya and Javier Bardem.

In talks to join the cast are Florence Pugh, who is in final negotiations to play Princess Irulan, and "Elvis" actor Austin Butler, who is in early talks to play Baron Vladimir Harkonnen's sadistic nephew and Feyd-Rautha heir.

Dune grossed nearly $400 million globally despite being released simultaneously on the HBO Max streaming platform in the United States. In Indonesia, "Dune" can be watched on HBO Go.
