JAKARTA - Director Edwin is back with his latest film, Like Revenge, Rindu Must Be Paid Completely. Adapted from a book by Eka Kurniawan, Edwin tries to present something that is rarely discussed by the public.

Like Dendam tells of Ajo Kawir (Marthino Lio), an impotent man who likes to fight. His meeting with Iteung (Ladya Cheryl) changed him but not his physical condition.

“Growing up in the heyday of the military regime, stories and myths about heroism and male virility became very familiar to me. Masculinity is the benchmark for manhood,” said Edwin on Wednesday, November 17.

Although the screenplay was written with the author, Edwin changed the story structure so that it could be enjoyed by ordinary audiences.

"We decided to use two main characters: Ajo Kawir and Iteung as the main vehicles," explained Edwin at Epicentrum XXI.

Through his new work, Edwin also displays the aesthetics of the '80s-'90s in various ways, one of which is the use of celluloid. Therefore, the production house Palari Films cooperated with a cinematographer from Japan to get the desired result.

“The film itself involves popular genres, such as Hong Kong style, such as films from the '80s in Asia which are very popular. The language alone has bound us all and there is a lot that can be explored,” said Edwin.

Indonesia became the last country as well as the return of the film Like Revenge to the homeland. This was done because both the producer and the director wanted this story to make Indonesian cinema more popular.

“We all hope that this film can expand the viewing experience outside Indonesia. Of course, this is an Indonesian film whose story is from Indonesia but it can be translated and appreciated creatively by foreign creative artists,” explained Edwin.

Films such as Revenge, Rindu Must be Paid Completely can be watched from 18 years and over starting December 2, 2021 in Indonesian cinemas.
