JAKARTA - Mattel Inc for the first time released an autistic Barbie doll. The release of this doll is considered a form of representation related to autism and invites more children to see themselves represented through the figure of Barbie.
"Barbie has always tried to reflect the world that children see, and the possibilities they imagine," said Global Head of Dolls, Mattel, Jamie Cygielman, quoted from the official website, on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
"We are proud to introduce our first autistic Barbie as part of this ongoing effort," he added.
The development of the doll was carried out for more than 18 months, through cooperation with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN). ASAN is a non-profit company run by and for autistic people with disabilities, working in the field of the rights of autistic people with disabilities.
The doll joins the Barbie Fashionistas collection, which features a variety of skin tones, hair textures, body types, and various medical conditions and disabilities.
With the dolls designed under the guidance of ASAN, it is considered to help expand the meaning of inclusion, because every child has the right to see themselves in Barbie.
"It's so important for autistic children to see authentic and joyful representations of themselves, and that's what this doll is," said ASAN Executive Director Colin Killick.
In its design, the doll is made with an authentic appearance, and reflects some of the experiences that individuals with autism spectrum may experience.
Starting with his body where the articulation of elbows and wrists, which allow for stimulation movements, flapping hands, and other hand gestures used by some members of the autistic community.
Then the gaze is designed to shift slightly to the side. This reflects how some members of the autistic community may avoid eye contact directly.
Not only that, the autistic Barbie doll also uses a loose A-line dress with a purple stripe, with short sleeves and a flared skirt that reduces fabric contact with the skin. Her feet are wearing purple shoes with a flat sole model to increase stability and ease of movement, which is adapted to some members of the autistic community.
