JAKARTA - The Makassar Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BBPOM) helps socialize the channel of communication of the risk of counterfeit drugs to protect the community.

"This channel specifically contains information regarding the findings of counterfeit drugs based on the results of BPOM supervision in the field," said the Head of BBPOM Makassar Yosef Dwi Irwan in Makassar, Tuesday.

He explained that the information displayed through the special channel includes the identity and photos of counterfeit drugs, the modus operandi of circulation, the impact of consumption, as well as the law enforcement efforts that have been carried out by BPOM against the findings of counterfeit drugs.

This channel can be accessed through the official BPOM website at https://www.pom.go.id/hot-issue/obat-palsu and BPOM's official social media channels.

This special channel is an effort by BPOM to provide access to information regarding the discovery of counterfeit drugs, thereby increasing public awareness of the dangers of using counterfeit drugs.

This is because the public's access to accurate information about counterfeit drugs is still limited so that not all people are able to distinguish between genuine and counterfeit drugs.

With this condition, the public is at risk of becoming victims of the circulation of counterfeit drugs and becoming a gap that perpetrators of crime use to distribute counterfeit drugs.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 1 in 10 medical products circulating in low- and middle-income countries are substandard or falsified products.

The estimate is still used as an overview of the magnitude of the problem of counterfeit drugs globally. For this reason, WHO urges each national regulatory authority (NRA) to communicate the findings of counterfeit drugs and report them to the public as a form of education and empowerment of the community to be able to identify counterfeit drugs.

BPOM released 8 products that were widely falsified as information to the public, namely Viagra, Cialis, Ventolin Inhaler, Dermovate, Ponstan, Tramadol Hydrochloride, Hexymer, and Trihexyphenidyl Hydrochloride.

The eight vulnerable products were found to be counterfeit based on the results of field supervision and reports from the community.
