JAKARTA - Chairperson of the Central Board of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, advised parents to be the first guardian of child protection in the digital era, by limiting application permits to technology devices.
"Parents must be actively involved, check, limit application permits, use the parental control feature," said DR. Dr. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, Sp.A, Subsp. Cardio (K), in a media seminar that was followed online in Jakarta, on Tuesday.
According to him, in the digital era, it is impossible for children to separate from technological devices, especially cell phones. Although it is useful for positive things such as distance learning, this device is also often an entry point for various problems related to this digital era.
He gave an example of problems that arise, such as addiction to playing gadgets, exposure to pornography, cyber bullying, to advertisements for child predators tucked in applications and games that can easily be clicked.
"Many applications and platforms sell children's data without parental permission, such as learning, gaming, and social media applications, often collect children's data passively and sell them for commercial purposes," he said.
Piprim also highlighted that many parents still have misperceptions or misunderstandings regarding child's digital security. Most parents think it is enough just to advise their children not to share personal information on the internet.
In fact, said Piprim, many applications are extracting data automatically and complex through location permits, microphone usage, contact numbers, and others.
Not only parents, he also emphasized the importance of school roles as the frontline in providing children with digital literacy.
"In today's times, schools are required to carry out digital literacy programs systematically and only partner with technology that is proven to comply with the principle of child data protection," he said.

Furthermore, Piprim added that the role of the state must also be present through the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) together with data protection authorities to conduct strict audits and supervision of technology companies.
"You have to actively audit schools, audit applications and technology companies used by children to ensure they comply with safety and privacy standards," he added.
