Sensitive Baby Skin Needs Proper Care to Maintain Skin Barrier

JAKARTA - Baby and child skin have characteristics that are different from adult skin. According to the study by Stamatas GN, et al. (2010), baby and child skin is about 30 percent thinner than adult skin.

The thin condition of the baby's skin makes the skin's ability to lock in water levels still not optimal because the skin's protective layer or skin barrier is still developing.

This also makes baby's skin more prone to dryness, irritation, and redness. Therefore, maintaining skin barrier health is one of the important steps in supporting children's comfort and growth.

Pediatric specialist dr. Ian Suryadi Suteja, M.Med Sc, Sp.A, explained that skin health is closely related to the quality of life of babies, including their rest time.

"Moisturizers for baby skin are very important. Because if the skin barrier is good, the child is not easily exposed to irritation, and can sleep well, so that the growth hormone also develops well. Even for children who have allergies, the skin barrier is more prone to irritation or redness. So it needs moisturizers containing Ceramide, Colloidal Extract, and Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate," he said.
