JAKARTA - The use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a fast tool to assess mental health conditions is now increasingly popular among young people. However, this trend actually makes experts alert.

FKUI-RSCM psychiatrist, dr. Kristiana Site reminded that relying on chatbots to diagnose psychological conditions can cause dangerous misunderstandings.

In the Multistakeholder Forwards a Smart Governance Dialogue event at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture Building on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, dr. Siste explained that more and more teenagers to young adults are trying to assess their personality or suspect that they have mental disorders only through AI.

"This AI is often used by Gen Z and Alpha genes to ask 'What is my personality? Introvert or extrovert? Am I depressed or not?' he said, quoted from the official website of the Ministry of Health.

dr. Siste said the phenomenon arose because some young people felt more comfortable telling chatbots than those closest to them. Some use AI as a place to vent when they feel isolated or lonely. Lack of communication in the family also encourages them to look for alternative 'hearders'.

Although AI is considered to be able to help as the first step to recognize certain symptoms, including internet addiction, gaming, and online gambling, dr. Siste emphasized that this technology still cannot replace health professionals. According to him, the results of AI analysis are often inaccurate and often give an overview.

He also highlighted the emergence of new habits on social media. Users show off the results of a diagnosis from a chatbot and then try to handle it on their own without consulting a doctor. The move is considered dangerous because it can worsen actual psychological conditions.

Too much dependence on AI also has the potential to make the younger generation further away from their social environment. There are concerns they will feel more understood by chatbots than by humans around them.

Dr. Siste reiterated that technology should be a supporting tool, not a substitute for experts. The role of the family remains important to assist the use of AI so as not to erode communication at home.

"AI is good if used together by family. Parents must understand first and then invite their children to interact together." he said.
