Myth Or Fact: Salt Water Can Blend Your Teeth?

JAKARTA - Many people believe gargling with salt water can be a natural way to whiten teeth. Salt has long been used as a traditional cleaning material, both for mouth and throat health. But is salt water really able to make teeth look whiteer?

"Salt water works by balancing the pH in the mouth. A more basey mouth environment makes it difficult for bacteria to develop, so the mouth becomes healthier," said drg. Marc Lazare, DDS, dentist in the United States, quoted from the Healthline page.

In other words, salt water serves mainly as a natural antibacterial. drg. Lazare helps reduce plaque and prevent gum inflammation, not as a bleach.

This was also confirmed by drg. Chris Kammer, a dentist and oral surgery specialist.

"Salt water kills many types of bacteria through the osmosis process, so it is effective in preventing infection. But there is no scientific evidence that salt water can whiten teeth," said drg. Kammer.

Although salt water does not contain bleach, the effects of hygiene can make the teeth look cleaner. Lowered plaque, healthier gums, and fresher mouth can give the impression of brighter teeth.

"Salt water helps reduce the buildup of bacteria and plaque. So even though it doesn't whiten directly, the condition of the teeth and mouth will look healthier," said drg. Gajjar.

If your main goal is to whiten teeth, dentists suggest some more appropriate ways:

- Professional care in dentists such as bleaching or laser whitening.

- Reducing food and drinks that cause stains, including coffee, tea, and cigarettes is the main cause of yellowing teeth.

- Maintain oral hygiene, such as brushes for at least two times a day, usefluoride toothpaste, and dental threads.

"Salt water can be a good addition to the oral hygiene routine, but don't consider it a substitute for dental bleaching treatment." explained drg. Jeffrey Haruszer.
