JAKARTA The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has again shown its seriousness in protecting the public. During June 2025, BPOM found 15 natural medicinal products (OBA) or commonly known as herbal medicines, which actually contained medicinal chemicals (BKO).

This discovery is part of the routine supervision that BPOM has been carrying out since the beginning of the year, following similar findings in the first quarter, as well as in April and May 2025.

After being tested in the laboratory, most of the 15 products contain citrate sildenaphiles. This is an active substance in hard drugs and is usually used to overcome erectile dysfunction problems.

Cydenafil sitrates can only be used with a doctor's prescription and under the supervision of medical personnel. Consumption of unsupervised sildenafil sitrates can trigger serious side effects, such as chest pain, palpitation heart disease, drop blood pressure drastically, stroke, and even heart attacks. This risk will get bigger, especially for people who have a history of heart disease or are taking certain drugs.

Head of BPOM, Taruna Ikrar stated that the circulation of this kind of product is very dangerous. Moreover, these products are packaged as if they are traditional or herbal medicines.

"These findings show that illegal producers deliberately mix BKO to provide misleading instantaneous effects. They don't care about long-term impacts on consumers," Taruna said, quoted from the official BPOM website on Saturday, July 19.

The Ikrar cadet explained that the circulation of illegal and dangerous products continues with various new modes. Perpetrators often market their products through the internet, social media, to secret distribution channels that are difficult to track.

These products are often claimed to be a supplement to increase stamina, especially for men, even though there are hidden dangers that are not notified to consumers.

As a follow-up step, all the products found have been withdrawn from circulation and destroyed. This is part of a close surveillance effort carried out nationally.

Not only that, BPOM is also investigating business actors involved in its production and distribution. Legal action will be taken in accordance with applicable regulations. BPOM also continues to cooperate with relevant agencies and provide education to the public to be more careful of unregistered products.

BPOM again reminds the public to be more careful in choosing herbal medicines or health supplements. Make sure the product you buy has an official distribution permit from BPOM. In addition, consumers are advised not to easily believe in products that promise instant benefits and are sold at unreasonable prices.
