JAKARTA - Researchers find daily eating habits that can make a person age faster, especially women. These eating habits are related to sugar consumption.

In a study recently published at the JAMA Network Open, researchers analyzed that it could be collected from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Insittitue Growth and Health Study (N Selambuh). There are about 350 women who are the subject of research with an age range of 9 to 19 years.

Women report information about their diet and provide saliva samples, which the team uses to analyze their biology. The study used a marker called GrimAge2, which provides information about the risk of illness and death.

As a result, women who usually consume additional sugar in their diet by more, show signs of faster cell aging. Sugar added can change the way cells function and invade a person's biological age.

"Gula itself is an inflammatory agent, as well as the cause of oxidative stress in the body," said researcher Dorothy Chiu, PhD, quoted from Health, on Monday, January 20, 2025.

Additional sugar refers to the sugar added to the food during the production process. Such as in sweet drinks and processed foods, which are different from natural sugars commonly found in milk, fruits, and vegetables.

Those who eat healthy foods, but continue to eat additional sugar, also affect their biological age. Cells age in the body biologically still reap faster, compared to their chronological age.
