Prabowo: Giant Sea Wall Development Can Be Completed in the Next 15-20 Years

JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto said that the construction of a giant sea wall or Giant Sea Wall (GSW) on the North Coast (Pantura) of Java along 575 kilometers can be completed within the next 15-20 years.

Later, the construction of the water infrastructure will be divided into 15 segments, ranging from Banten to Gresik, East Java.

This was revealed by Prabowo in the Annual Meeting of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and a joint session of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) and the Indonesian DPD in 2026, Friday, August 14.

"This Giant Sea Wall project will take 15 to 20 years for us to complete its construction, this is a long time," he said.

Prabowo is optimistic that the project will begin in the era of the government he leads. "I don't know how many presidents will inaugurate it, but I am determined that the 8th president will start this project," he said.

According to the Head of State, the Giant Sea Wall project can be completed faster if the work can be carried out in parallel.

"We plan to divide this construction into 15 segments from Banten to Gresik, East Java, and if implemented simultaneously, it is actually possible (the completion time) to be reduced from 20 years," said Prabowo.

He assessed that the construction of the Giant Sea Wall was crucial because it concerned the livelihood of many people living around the Java Pantura.

"Whatever we have to dare to start, this concerns the livelihood of tens of millions of our people who live in Pantura and must remember how many percent of our industries are in areas in Pantura, from West Java to East Java. So, the future of our industry is also at stake," he said.

Furthermore, Prabowo is optimistic that the Giant Sea Wall project will begin in his administration. Moreover, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has produced technological breakthroughs that will be used for the construction of the infrastructure.

"The Giant Sea Wall in Pantura Java must be built immediately and become a protective belt for millions of residents of Pantura Java to save tens of thousands of hectares that have begun to sink due to rising seas," explained Prabowo.

"In addition, our Giant Sea Wall in Central Java must become a clean water infrastructure, must become a new growth path and an engineering project that builds the ability of the nation's children," he concluded.

The construction of the infrastructure is estimated to require an estimated budget of around 100 billion US dollars.
