JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI plans to bring back the Commuter Line KRL service at Gambir Station, Jakarta, through the construction of two special or dedicated tracks.
This step was taken to facilitate public access to the National Monument (Monas) area, as well as encourage the use of public transportation in the center of the capital city.
KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin said the development of Gambir Station was aimed at changing the pattern of community mobility, which until now still relies on private vehicles when heading to the Monas area.
"If the public still relies on private cars to go to Monas, what happens is congestion and the area will be filled with parking," said Bobby while chatting on the way from Yogyakarta to Jakarta, written on Thursday, July 10.
Therefore, KAI plans to build two special KRL lines at Gambir Station so that the people of Jabodetabek have easier access to public transportation to the center of Jakarta.
"Now there are four tracks in Gambir. We add two. But it will not be integrated. Two new lines, one separate platform for commuters. So that this makes it easier for people in Jabodetabek to access the name of Monas. So the integration, interconnectivity, intermodality," he said.
Bobby emphasized that the development of Gambir Station would not change the function of Manggarai Station as an intermodal integration center. According to him, Gambir will be positioned as an entrance to the Monas area which is connected to various public transportation modes.
To support this plan, KAI will build a special KRL track and platform that is separate from long-distance train services. Thus, the operation of the two services can run more reliably without interfering with each other.
"The KRL line will be made dedicated with a platform that is different from long-distance trains. So each service has its own operating space so that it is more reliable and does not interfere with each other," said Bobby.
In addition to bringing back the KRL service, KAI also prepares the integration of Gambir Station with the MRT in the Monas area, Transjakarta, and pedestrian connectivity. According to Bobby, this scheme is expected to make it easier for people from Bogor, Depok, Bekasi, and other buffer areas to access the center of Jakarta without having to use private vehicles.
"Until now, people from Depok, Bogor, Bekasi, and other buffer areas still find it difficult to access Monas with public transportation. In the future, we want people to be able to come using KRL, then connect with MRT and other modes so that the journey becomes easier," he said.
Meanwhile, KAI Facilities Management Director Heru Kuswanto said that KRL services had previously stopped at Gambir Station. However, the operation was stopped because the KRL and long-distance trains at that time used the same platform, which affected the smoothness of the journey.
"Previously, KRL indeed stopped at Gambir, but used the same platform as long-distance trains so that its operations were not optimal. Now the concept is different because each service will have its own line and platform," said Heru.
