JAKARTA - Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Perry Warjiyo assessed that Indonesia's coffee industry has great opportunities to strengthen its position in the global market with the wealth of coffee varieties and agricultural ecosystems it has, Indonesia is considered capable of utilizing the potential of the world coffee market, which is valued at around 12.5 billion US dollars.

According to Perry, the quality of Indonesian coffee has received international recognition, and a number of Indonesian coffee farmers have even achieved achievements in various world competitions.

However, he assessed that the potential was not fully supported by the availability of human resources with international competence standards.

"Indonesian coffee has tremendous potential to penetrate the global market. How many times have the coffee farmers we have trained won the Atlanta championship? How many times in London? In Boston there are. Now let's raise the impact because the potential is 12.5 billion US dollars for its revenue. 12.5 billion dollars. It's not rupiah, it's dollars," he said at the Kick Off Program for the Transformation of Integrated MSME Entrepreneurship in 2026, Monday, June 22, 2026.

Perry revealed that the growth of coffee outlets in Indonesia reached around 23.9 percent per year, and this figure shows the size of the opportunity for the development of the national coffee industry, both in the domestic and international markets.

However, he highlighted the low number of Indonesian baristas who have international certifications, namely from around 923 thousand baristas currently working in various regions in Indonesia, only around 100 people have bagged global standard certifications.

"Of the 923 thousand baristas throughout Indonesia, only 100 have international certification. Therefore, this is why we must mass-certify internationally," he said.

Therefore, he continued, BI together with stakeholders is encouraging the acceleration of international certification programs for baristas.

Perry said that this step is expected to improve the quality of human resources and strengthen Indonesia's position in the world coffee industry value chain.

Through the Integrated MSME Entrepreneurship Transformation Program 2026, Perry targets the birth of around 400 internationally certified baristas every year, and this number is equivalent to four times the total number of Indonesian baristas who currently have international certification.

"Through this program, every year we will target 400 baristas who are internationally certified. Four times more than what already exists. Try five years that exist, 400 people times five years," he said.

Perry said that the program not only focuses on improving technical skills, but also on developing entrepreneurship, after completing basic training, participants will undergo a mentoring stage (sandboxing) to test their business capabilities.

In the next phase, participants who are deemed ready will be encouraged to build and develop their own coffee shop business.

"That is, after this first stage (entrepreneurship education), then the second stage is sandboxing. In the third stage, we will choose which ones are able to independently open cafes throughout Indonesia," he said.
