JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI has recorded significant progress in the program to close the risky single-track crossing in various operational areas. As of June 4, 2026, KAI has closed 118 single-track crossings or reached 69 percent of the national target of 172 locations.
The achievement of closing priority crossings is spread across a number of operational areas. Divre I North Sumatra became the region with the most closures after completing all targets of 39 locations. Then Daop 4 Semarang completed 11 locations and Divre III Palembang as many as 6 locations.
Meanwhile, Daop 2 Bandung, Daop 3 Cirebon, Daop 6 Yogyakarta, and Daop 7 Madiun have also completed all priority crossing closure targets in their respective regions.
However, KAI still has homework to complete the closure of 54 other locations to achieve the national target that has been set.
The program is part of KAI's ongoing efforts to improve railway travel safety while reducing the potential for accidents involving road users at the intersection.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that every crossing that was closed was a real step in reducing accident-prone points.
"Every crossing that is successfully closed means reducing one risk point that has the potential to cause accidents. Therefore, we continue to coordinate with local governments, ministries, and stakeholders to accelerate this program," Anne said in an official statement, Friday, June 5.
Based on KAI data, out of a total of 3,674 per crossings spread across various operational areas, as many as 1,810 of them are crossings that are not guarded. This condition is a major concern for the company in carrying out a safety improvement program.
Therefore, the closure of the crossing is carried out at points that are considered to have a high risk, accompanied by an increase in safety aspects at locations that are still needed by the community for daily mobility.
This step is becoming increasingly important considering the number of accidents at the sebidang crossing is still relatively high. Based on KAI data, from 2023 to 24 May 2026, there were 1,074 accidents at the sebidang crossing with a total of 964 victims. Most of the incidents occurred at the unmonitored crossing and were triggered by the behavior of road users who broke through when the train was passing.
KAI again reminded that whether there is a gate or not, in an open or closed condition, road users are still required to stop for a moment and ensure the condition of the track is safe before crossing.
"The train has a track and travel priority that must be prioritized. Let's work together to maintain safety with discipline when crossing a piece of track. Stop for a moment, look right and left, then cross safely," concluded Anne.
