JAKARTA - PT Waskita Karya (Persero) Tbk strengthens its expansion into the Middle East construction market by utilizing the track record of projects that have been carried out in Saudi Arabia. The company is one of the Indonesian contractors that has a complete operational license and an official presence in the country.
Waskita Karya Corporate Secretary Ermy Puspa Yunita said that the experience of working on a number of strategic projects in Saudi Arabia has become an important capital for the company to capture opportunities for infrastructure development in the Middle East region.
One of the projects that Waskita has worked on is the renovation of the mataf area or tawaf area around the Ka'bah, Masjidil Haram, Makkah.
The project, which is part of the King Abdullah Makkah Extension (KAME) expansion, was completed in 2013 with a contract value of 59 million Saudi riyals.
Renovations were carried out to increase the capacity of the tawaf area, so that it can accommodate more pilgrims. After the project was completed, the capacity of the mataf increased from 48,000 pilgrims to more than 105,000 pilgrims.
"Previously, the mataf could only accommodate 48,000 worshipers, but after being renovated it could accommodate up to more than 105,000 worshipers. For Waskita, expanding the Mataf of the Grand Mosque is not just a project, but a manifestation of our commitment to providing infrastructure that is beneficial to the international community," said Ermy in a written statement, Wednesday, June 3.
According to Ermy, the project uses the slab formwork and cantilever beam methods to increase construction precision while supporting time and cost efficiency.
Apart from the Mataf Masjidil Haram project, Waskita has also worked on a number of other projects in Saudi Arabia, including King Saud Fitness College in 2011, King Saud University of Riyadh Techno Valley & Building Administration College in Riyadh in 2009, and the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) business area which was built in the period 2010-2012.
The company is also involved in the construction of the Jeddah Flyover and King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah.
Ermy assessed that this experience strengthened the company's position as a national contractor with experience in working on international projects.
In the past decade, the company has been involved in the development of more than 100 infrastructure projects in various sectors.
"The construction of a number of projects in Saudi Arabia strengthens Waskita Karya's position as a contractor company that has 65 years of experience working on more than 100 infrastructure in the last 10 years," he said.
In the future, Waskita is trying to expand its overseas project portfolio, especially in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East region. The company has prepared a number of strategies, including strengthening strategic partnerships to increase opportunities and follow infrastructure project tenders in the region.
