JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) continues to encourage the strengthening of the national battery-based electric motor vehicle (KBLBB) industry ecosystem as part of the transformation towards a sustainable green industry.

One of the main focuses that is now being strengthened is the involvement of small and medium industries (IKM) in the domestic electric vehicle supply chain.

The reason is that the Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that Indonesia has a great opportunity to become a major player in the global electric vehicle industry.

This potential is supported by the availability of natural resources, the size of the domestic market, and government support in building an electric vehicle ecosystem from upstream to downstream.

"The government through Presidential Regulation Number 55 of 2019 has confirmed its commitment to the development of electric vehicles as part of the energy transition agenda, green economy and national industrialization," said Agus as quoted from a written statement, Friday, May 29.

According to Agus, the strengthening of the KBLBB industry structure continues to be accelerated so that it can compete globally while providing added value for the national economy.

Therefore, the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem not only involves large industries, but also opens up space for national SMEs.

Agus emphasized that the involvement of IKM is expected to encourage technology transfer, knowledge, and capacity building for domestic industries in the future.

As a concrete step, the Directorate General of Small, Medium and Multi-Industry (IKMA) of the Ministry of Industry has partnered with the Directorate General of ILMATE, the Investment Ministry/BKPM, PT SGMW Motor Indonesia and PT VKTR Mobility Technology in the IKM Transportation Business Opportunity Exploration in the KBLBB Supply Chain in Cikarang, West Java.

The activity was attended by automotive component SMEs, regional governments, associations, and the national automotive component industry. The agenda is aimed at opening up opportunities for strategic partnerships between SMEs and large-scale electric vehicle industries.

The Director General of IKMA, Ministry of Industry, Reni Yanita explained, this activity is a platform to introduce the needs of the electric vehicle industry, including related to the fulfillment of the Domestic Component Level (TKDN).

"We hope that this activity can open up the potential for strategic partnerships between transportation equipment SMEs and large industries as well as provide information on the need for electric vehicle components to meet TKDN," he said.

Reni added that the current national electric vehicle industry trend continues to show positive growth.

Based on Gaikindo data, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEV) in the first quarter of 2026 reached 33,150 units, up 95.9 percent compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the national electric bus population until April 2026 was recorded as 798 units. As for two-wheeled electric vehicles reached 236,451 units in February 2026 or about 65 percent of the total national electric vehicle population.

"This is a potential that must be maximized by IKM actors in the automotive component industry so that they can also reap the benefits and maximize business opportunities in the future," he said.
