JAKARTA - PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk (WIKA) continues to accelerate the completion of the Semarang-Demak Toll Road project.

Until May 2026, WIKA's work progress on the Semarang-Demak Section 1B Toll project has reached 83.39 percent.

The achievement includes a number of major works, including the construction of main roads, ramps on, ramps off, elevated bridges, combi walls and sand piles on top of bamboo mats.

WIKA Corporate Secretary Ngatemin explained that, unlike toll road projects in general, the Semarang-Demak Toll Road is designed as a multifunctional infrastructure that not only supports transportation connectivity, but is also integrated as a sea dike.

"The presence of this project is expected to help overcome the problem of flash floods in the Semarang coastal area and its surroundings, so that it provides a double benefit as a transportation infrastructure as well as a long-term flood control solution," said Ngatemin as quoted from a written statement, Tuesday, May 26.

In its implementation, WIKA applied a number of special construction methods, considering that the project is located in a coastal area with soft soil characteristics that have quite high technical challenges.

One of the important elements in the project is the use of a combi wall as part of the sea embankment structure as well as the containment of the toll road pile.

It is known that the combi wall structure is designed to withstand the combined pressure of soil and seawater, including hydrostatic pressure and potential soil subsidence.

"Thus, this structure plays an important role in maintaining long-term construction stability in coastal areas prone to flash floods," he said.

In addition, the project also uses a sand pile method on top of the bamboo mat as a solution to strengthen the soil foundation.

The method serves to help distribute the load of the pile to be more even, increase the initial stability of the construction and reduce the risk of differential settlement in soft soil.

"Through this project, we strive to ensure that work is carried out by prioritizing construction quality, work safety, and the application of methods that are in accordance with the characteristics of coastal areas," he said.

Through the Semarang-Demak Toll Project, WIKA once again confirms its role as a strategic partner of the government in presenting infrastructure development that not only improves connectivity, but also provides solutions to environmental challenges and community needs in a sustainable manner.
