Bank Indonesia (BI) targets the expansion of QRIS digital payment cooperation to Timor Leste in 2026.
This step is carried out as part of efforts to expand cross-border transactions while maintaining digital economic growth amid global uncertainty.
Deputy Governor of BI Filianingsih Hendarta said that the development of QRIS between countries will continue to be expanded after previously being connected to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, and China.
"In the future we will expand QRIS cross-border. In 2026 it is targeted with India, Hong Kong, and also Timor Leste," he said in the RDG May press conference, quoted, May 20.
According to him, the expansion of QRIS connectivity across the country aims to facilitate transactions for tourists, trade, and business activities in regional areas.
He added that digital payment systems are also considered to have an important role in maintaining the resilience of the domestic economy amid global uncertainties, including the impact of conflicts in the Middle East.
In the results of the May 2026 Board of Governors Meeting, BI emphasized that the payment system policy is still directed to support economic growth even though the reference interest rate was raised to 5.25 percent.
BI Governor Perry Warjiyo explained that the implementation of the Indonesia-China Cross-Border QRIS is part of strengthening cross-border digital payment connectivity.
Previously, the service had been connected to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea.
"The implementation of the Indonesia-China Cross-Border QRIS is carried out as an effort to expand cross-border digital payment connectivity," he said.
In the country, BI also carries out the QRIS Jelajah Indonesia 2026 program with a target of reaching 47 million merchants next year.
This program is focused on expanding the use of digital payments, especially for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Meanwhile, QRIS transactions continue to show significant growth. In April 2026, the volume of QRIS transactions increased by 108.43 percent year-on-year as the number of digital payment users and merchants increased.
