Purbaya: The weakening of the rupiah is not a reflection of the fundamentals of the Indonesian economy.

JAKARTA - Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa assessed that the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate does not reflect the deteriorating fundamental conditions of the Indonesian economy.

In fact, the domestic economy is still relatively strong compared to other countries in the region.

"But for me, this (weakening of the rupiah) is not a sign of deterioration or triggered by the deterioration of the domestic economy. Compared to other countries, we are still strong. Even compared to Malaysia, Thailand and others are still strong," he said in a media briefing in Jakarta, Friday, April 24. reported by ANTARA.

The Minister of Finance explained that the dynamics of the weakening of the rupiah were more influenced by global factors and market expectations.

From the Ministry of Finance's side, it will continue to work to mitigate the interference or "noise" that triggers negative perceptions of the Indonesian economy.

One of the steps taken is to close potential leaks in the tax system and ensure that policies run more effectively.

Then, a number of issues that had caused polemics, including certain tax policies, have also been simplified to reduce uncertainty in the market.

Furthermore, the State Treasurer emphasized the importance of managing public expectations and market participants.

According to him, the negative sentiment circulating could worsen the perception of the rupiah, even though the fundamental conditions of the economy have not changed.

"What is clear is that our economic foundation has not changed. In fact, it will grow faster because we will be more serious about improving the constraints in the economy. This is also a 'noise' that seems to describe our economy is heading for a crisis in the next few months," he explained.

As is known, the rupiah exchange rate at the close of today's trading was recorded to have strengthened by 57 points or 0.33 percent to Rp17,229 per US dollar from the previous close at the level of Rp17,286 per US dollar.
