JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has confirmed its support for the use of aseptic paper-based packaging (paperboard) as an environmentally friendly alternative for the food and beverage industry (mamin).

This step is a strategy to maintain the competitiveness of the national industry through distribution efficiency, maintaining product quality without preservatives and reducing dependence on the cooling chain.

Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that his party had started to encourage the use of non-plastic packaging, especially paper-based or paperboard. This type of packaging is considered to be competitive enough and the proportion is also quite large, namely around 28 percent of the total packaging of the mamin industry.

"Paper packaging is currently widely used for products such as milk and beverages. We are committed to continue to spur the development of alternative packaging raw material through a business matching scheme between producers and users," said Agus in a written statement, Friday, April 24.

This effort is expected to increase the use of paper-based packaging as a substitute for plastic.

Acting Director General of Agro Industry, Ministry of Industry, Putu Juli Ardika, added that the use of aseptic paper-based packaging is in line with the government's policy direction in encouraging more environmentally friendly industrial practices.

The form of commitment and support was shown through workshops and visits held at PT Lami Packaging Indonesia with mamin industry business actors members of the Indonesian Food and Beverage Entrepreneurs Association (Gapmmi) which was carried out some time ago.

Gapmmi Chairman Adhi S. Lukman said that the workshop was needed to find alternative solutions so that the mamin industry could continue to grow.

"In anticipating various industry challenges, there are two important aspects, namely procurement and the manufacturing division. The manufacturing division needs to increase efficiency in order to remain competitive, while procurement needs to expand sourcing. This visit is also part of our efforts in finding alternative sources of packaging," he said.

Meanwhile, the Director of Beverage Industry, Tobacco Products and Refreshing Materials of the Directorate General of Agro Industry, Merrijantij Punguan Pintaria, said that his party supports the domestic beverage industry to continue to innovate, one of which is through the use of sustainable packaging.

"The price of aseptic packaging from paper is not apple to apple with plastic packaging, but when converted in its entirety, the results may be the same because aseptic packaging from paper does not require a cold chain and a refrigerator for storage and the raw materials of the paper are quite stable," he said.
