JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) officially closed the registration of human resources (HR) recruitment for the integrated shrimp pond program in Waingapu, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

The program is part of the KKP's strategic efforts to strengthen the national aquaculture fisheries sector as well as supporting the big agenda of food security and blue economy development.

Based on data from the registration dashboard managed by the Marine and Fisheries Human Resources Development and Extension Agency (BPPSDM KP), 4,796 applicants have registered for the recruitment process, which has been open since February 2026.

The high number of applicants is considered to reflect the public's interest in job opportunities in the marine and fisheries sector, especially in area-based cultivation programs.

"This enthusiasm shows that the marine and fisheries sector is increasingly in demand as a new economic growth space, while opening up opportunities for young people to contribute to national development," said Head of BPPSDM KP I Nyoman Radiarta quoted from the official statement, Thursday, April 16.

Nyoman explained that the majority of applicants came from East Sumba Regency as the location of the program, with a total of around 73 percent of the total number of applicants.

According to him, this figure shows the high enthusiasm of local people for job opportunities in the cultivation sector.

However, the applicants are not only from East Sumba Regency, but also from various other areas in NTT, such as Central Sumba, Southwest Sumba and Kupang City as well as a number of other areas.

In terms of demographics, the majority of applicants are in the productive age range, namely 21-30 years, which reflects the high participation of the younger generation in the development of the marine and fisheries sector.

Meanwhile, the background of the applicant's education is dominated by high school/equivalent and undergraduate (S1) graduates, showing a combination of the potential for a ready-to-train workforce and educated workforce.

Most of the applicants have not yet had relevant work experience in the aquaculture field, so the HR program is expected to be a gateway for developing new competencies through special classes, structured training and mentoring activities.

The next phase includes health selection, interviews and psychometric tests, with the final announcement scheduled for July 15, 2026. This phase is an important part of ensuring the readiness of professional and competent human resources to support the operational cultivation of ponds in Waingapu.

The cultivation pond program in Waingapu itself is one of the priority initiatives in encouraging the increase in national fisheries production based on regions, integrated with the strengthening of human resources, technology and business management.

KKP is optimistic that it can create an ecosystem for productive, sustainable cultivation and contribute to improving the welfare of coastal communities and strengthening the regional economy.
