NHM Restores 232.69 Hectares of Former Mining Land in Gosowong

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM) reclaims 232.69 hectares of former mine land in the Gosowong Gold Mine area, North Halmahera, until 2026.

NORTH HALMAHERA - PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM) will reclaim 232.69 hectares of ex-mining land in the Gosowong Gold Mine area, North Halmahera, by 2026. This achievement demonstrates that mining activities will not stop at production but also focus on restoring the mined land.

The reclamation and revegetation program has been implemented in stages since operations began in 2000. The initial location was the Gosowong Main Waste Dump. Of the total rehabilitated land, several areas have returned to their original function with a 100 percent success rate. Other areas are still in the recovery process.

NHM considers reclamation part of its environmental responsibility and corporate obligations. This step is taken to minimize the impact of mining and restore the land to its intended use.

The process is lengthy. Reclamation involves land surface planning, spreading topsoil, managing soil quality, and replanting vegetation appropriate to local conditions. This scheme is designed to restore post-mining land to its ecological function and allow for sustainable use.

NHM's Health, Safety and Environmental Manager, Widi Wijaya, said reclamation is an important part of mine management. "Reclamation is carried out to minimize environmental impacts, while simultaneously managing, restoring, and repairing land formerly affected by mining activities, as well as returning disturbed land to its intended function," he said in a written statement received on Tuesday, April 7.

NHM's reclamation implementation also adheres to regulations in the mining sector, including Law Number 4 of 2009 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining, Government Regulation Number 78 of 2010 concerning Reclamation and Post-Mining, and other derivative regulations from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

From an operational perspective, this figure of 232.69 hectares is no small feat. Amidst the spotlight on environmentally friendly mining practices, this achievement conveys that land restoration is now a vital measure, not an add-on. For NHM, reclamation is part of the company's strategy to simultaneously maintain business sustainability and the environment.
