JAKARTA - Bank Indonesia (BI) together with the Bank of Korea (BoK) officially launched the implementation of cross-border payment system cooperation based on the Indonesian Standard Quick Response Code (QRIS) between Indonesia and South Korea on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

Deputy Governor of BI Filianingsih Hendarta explained that he conveyed his appreciation to the governments and authorities of the two countries, especially the Bank of Korea, for the partnership which was considered strong and constructive until the cooperation could be implemented.

"We also appreciate all stakeholders, both ministries and agencies, embassies, both the Indonesian Embassy in Korea and the Korean Embassy in Indonesia. Of course, the association and industry players who have contributed since the design, development, to implementation stages," he said. Launching QRIS Cross Border South Korea, Wednesday, April 1.

Filianingsih said that the implementation of QRIS across the country with South Korea was one of the fastest compared to similar cooperation, with a process of less than one year.

According to him, this close collaboration ensures that the innovations built are not only mature in concept, but are also ready to provide real benefits to the community.

Furthermore, he explained, the development of the national payment system refers to the Indonesian Payment System Blueprint (BSPI) 2025 which continues to BSPI 2030 as a strategic framework for digital transformation.

He added that BSPI not only focuses on digitization, but also includes aspects of sovereignty, efficiency, and global connectivity.

"In this context, Qris Antar Negara is at the intersection of two main pillars in BSPI, we see, namely the innovation pillar and the international pillar," he explained.

He added that the innovation pillar aims to increase efficiency and inclusion through the use of technology, while the international pillar focuses on strengthening the connectivity of payments between countries that are fast, easy, cheap, safe, and reliable, without neglecting the aspects of sovereignty and risk management.

Through this approach, said Filianingsih, Indonesia not only plays a role as a user, but also as a partner in developing together with central banks in the region in building a more inclusive and more equitable global payment ecosystem.

Filianingsih said the implementation of QRIS between Indonesia and South Korea was a concrete step in expanding connectivity.

According to him, in addition to facilitating transactions, this cooperation also opens economic opportunities, especially in the tourism and trade sectors, as the mobility of the two countries' people increases.

"This not only makes transactions easier, but also opens up wider business opportunities, both in the tourism sector, we know many Indonesians who go to South Korea, visit Korean cafes, that's right, and also Koreans who come to Indonesia," he explained.

He added that by joining South Korea as a BI partner, Indonesia's payment connectivity network is wider, complementing cooperation with other Asian countries.
