JAKARTA - Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo revealed the latest news regarding the planned construction of a toll road in the Anai Valley area, West Sumatra (Sumbar).

Dody said, his party had assigned the Toll Road Business Entity (BUJT) PT Hutama Karya (Persero) regarding the plan to build the toll road.

However, he said, currently his party is discussing technical requirements related to the construction of the toll road.

"The original plan, of course, we use Hutama Karya. But, there are some technical requirements that will be regulated by the Director General of Bina Marga together with the Head of BPJT," said Dody when answering VOI's questions when he was met at his office, Friday, March 6.

"I, sih, just follow the instructions of the Director General. Whoever wants it, the important thing is to be quick," he added.

According to Dody, the construction of the toll road is very crucial because the national road is prone to landslides if it is rained for about 4-5 hours.

"The National Road in the Anai Valley, actually, if I personally say it is no longer feasible. Because the cliff is already naudzubillah min dzalik. So if it rains hard for 4-5 hours, I have confidence that it will slide again. So, the toll is like an inevitability," he said.

"Why should there be a toll? Because the traffic is quite good and high," he continued.

Even so, Dody did not deny that the toll construction indeed had a fairly large level of difficulty because it had to penetrate the Anai Valley tunnel.

"Because the difficulty level is quite big too. Because, right, you have to break the tunnel," said Dody.

Furthermore, Dody targets, the construction of the toll road will begin this year. "It should (construction) start this year and it has been approved by the President. Because when reviewing it, we had already conveyed it and the President said okay, just do it," he concluded.

Previously, the plan to build a toll road in the Anai Valley area, West Sumatra, was revealed by the PU Minister in mid-December 2025. The plan to build a toll road is expected to reduce traffic congestion on the road around the Anai Valley.

Moreover, Dody said, the condition of the road in the Anai Valley which connects Padang City with Bukittingi is very worrying. The reason is that the road has been hit by flash floods twice, namely in 2024 and 2025.

This was revealed by Dody after his visit to West Sumatra to check the condition of infrastructure after the late November 2025 flood.

"The Anai Valley, right, there is already a national road connecting Padang to Bukittinggi. Well, there is a hill that is very steep (bald), so when I was there yesterday, I had ordered my team to the Director General of Infrastructure to pay attention to this hill. It could cause flooding again later, if the rain is still heavy," said Dody in a media briefing on the Preparedness of the 2025 Christmas and New Year 2026 Infrastructure in the PU Ministry Auditorium, Jakarta, Thursday, December 18.

"That's why we thought, yes, we've made a toll road that blows the hill, it's as a help so that the road below, in the Anai Valley, is not too crowded anymore," he continued.

In addition, Dody also asked for an alternative road to be made because the load of the road crossing the Anai Valley is already very large.
