JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) will conduct a road test (road test) of hydrogen-based vehicles, such as buses, cars and converted motorcycles in July as part of the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit (GHES) 2026.

"This event (GHES) will also feature various main programs, such as conferences, business matching, hydrogen road tests, and hydrogen vehicle test drives," said Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot, quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, February 10.

Yuliot said that the series of events was an effort by the government to convince stakeholders regarding the development of the hydrogen industry in Indonesia.

The government's desire to develop a hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia exceeds the use of hydrogen in the fertilizer industry. Yuliot said he wanted the hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia to penetrate the transportation sector.

The Indonesian government has designated hydrogen and ammonia as strategic New Energy Sources through Government Regulation Number 40 of 2025, with a projection of hydrogen's contribution of around 10-12 percent to national primary energy by 2060.

Currently, the utilization of hydrogen in Indonesia is still dominated by the fertilizer and refinery industries, with a national consumption of around 1.75 million tons per year.

Thus, the implementation of GHES 2026 is directed to strengthen cross-sectoral collaboration in supporting the development of hydrogen and ammonia as part of the national energy transition agenda and the achievement of Net Zero Emission by 2060 or sooner.

The hydrogen road test is planned to be carried out on July 23 as part of the GHES 2026 series, including testing of hydrogen-based vehicles such as buses, cars, and converted motorcycles, which cover the Sudirman-Thamrin route.

"Of course the government is very interested in the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit, because we see it from the ecosystem side," said Yuliot.
