JAKARTA - The River Basin Agency (BWS) of the Water Resources Directorate General of the Ministry of Public Works (PU) is currently identifying and surveying two field locations affected by river flooding in North Maluku Province (Malut), namely the Ake Aru River in the North Galela District, North Halmahera Regency, and the Ibu River in the Ibu District, West Halmahera Regency.
Minister PU Dody Hanggodo said that the safety of the community and the sustainability of the function of water resources infrastructure were the main priorities in handling floods.
"We are committed to being present quickly at the location affected by the disaster. Field identification and survey are the basis for determining the right handling steps, including the deployment of heavy equipment so that the risk of subsequent flooding can be minimized," said Dody, quoted from a written statement, Thursday, January 15.
For the Ake Aru River, North Halmahera Regency, the North Maluku BWS team mapped the location of flood-affected areas and checked the condition of river infrastructure, including post-flood bridges.
The results of the identification showed changes in the river flow and sedimentation which could potentially disrupt the river's capacity, so that further technical handling steps are needed.
Meanwhile, in the Ibu River, West Halmahera Regency, flooding caused flooding in residential areas as well as river bank and river mouth damage.
The BWS North Maluku team also identified critical points that could potentially worsen flooding if not immediately addressed, especially on the river banks that have experienced landslides.
Head of the North Maluku Water Resources Office of the Ministry of PU, M. Saleh Talib, said that the identification and field survey were carried out thoroughly as a basis for technical decision-making.
"We have carried out identification and direct surveys on the Ake Aru River and the Mother River to ensure the existing river conditions after the flood," he said.
From the results, he said, his party is currently preparing various emergency handling and reconstruction steps in accordance with the needs in the field.
Furthermore, Saleh also emphasized that his party had alerted heavy equipment to support flood management.
"During the emergency response period, our heavy equipment is deployed for the work of cleaning sediment material, repairing river channels, and securing the river banks and infrastructure so that the function of the river can be immediately recovered and the risk of repeated flooding can be suppressed," he said.
As part of the integrated response, the Ministry of PU through BWS North Maluku also coordinates with local governments and related agencies to ensure that flood management is effective and integrated, including in terms of securing residential areas and public infrastructure.
The PU Ministry will continue to monitor the development of conditions on the ground and prepare follow-up handling steps based on technical evaluation results.
This effort is part of the Ministry of PU's commitment to maintaining the resilience of water resources infrastructure and protecting the community from the impact of hydrometeorological disasters.
