JAKARTA - Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo ensures that people involved in cleaning and handling post-flood in a number of areas in Sumatra will be paid by the state through a labor-intensive scheme.

According to Dody, this policy was taken to accelerate recovery while providing direct income for affected residents.

"Because of the urgent need for handling, we are currently working 24 hours a day, even at night we are working. For the public and colleagues who are willing to help, we involve them in the intensive labor program, so that they get paid," said Dody in a Coordination Meeting (Rakor) of the Post-disaster Recovery Task Force with the Regional K/L Affected, broadcast via YouTube DPR RI, Tuesday, December 30.

The Ministry of PU has also sent a team to a number of the most severely affected areas, such as Aceh Tamiang, Pidie Jaya to Gayo Lues.

Initially, the handling was focused on Aceh Tamiang and Pidie Jaya, but as the field progressed, it was found that damage also occurred in other districts with similar conditions. Dody said, one of the challenges faced was cleaning the muddy area of 1 meter to 2 meters.

According to Dody, this condition requires a lot of manpower for the cleaning of various public facilities, ranging from bridges, general public hospitals (RSUD), boarding schools, schools to city roads. In the process, the PU Ministry is also assisted by the TNI.

He hopes that the labor-intensive scheme will not only be a form of humanitarian cooperation, but also provide direct economic benefits for disaster-affected communities.

"Hopefully, the affected people and volunteers will not only be involved in humanitarian action, but also receive a small contribution from the state," he added.
