JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) revealed the impact of the Sumatra flash flood in the maritime and fisheries sector, especially related to salt production in Aceh Province.
KKP noted that at least eight regencies whose salt production was disrupted because the ponds were flooded.
"So, we have listed that there are eight districts in Aceh affected by the salt ponds due to the disaster of yesterday's flood," said Director of Marine Resources of the Directorate General of Marine Management of the KKP, Frista Yorhanita, at a press conference at his office, Tuesday, December 30.
A total of eight districts include, Aceh Besar; Aceh Timur; Aceh Selatan; Aceh Barat Daya; Aceh Utara; Pidie Jaya; and Bireuen. Frista said, the salt ponds in the area were damaged and submerged in the flood. His party is still calculating the estimated losses of the salt ponds due to the disaster.
"So, the majority in the district, all the salt ponds are flooded, there is also some damage to the salt houses, 50 percent of the boiling salt has been damaged," he said.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Directorate General of Marine Management of the KKP, Miftahul Huda, said that the majority of salt farmers in Aceh use the method of boiling seawater/old water to become salt. Since 2018, the KKP has provided tunnel technology assistance to support this method.
"Since 2018, the KKP has intervened in support of Aceh with the tunnel, some locations are good. This good location is affected (by disaster)," he explained.
Previously, the Ministry of Agriculture also said that many shrimp farms were damaged by flash floods that hit Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra.
Director General of Marine Resources and Fisheries Supervision (PSDKP) of the KKP, Pung Nugroho Sasono, said that the affected shrimp ponds were filled with mud.
"We know together that many ponds (affected by flooding) and they are all flat," said the man who is familiarly called Ipunk in the Cesium-137 Free Shrimp Export Release event at Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta, Wednesday, December 3.
