KKP Warns Fishermen Regarding Extreme Weather at the End of the Year

JAKARTA - Extreme weather still overshadows a number of Indonesian waters at the end of the year. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) reminds fishermen and ship owners to always be alert and not force themselves to sail if the natural conditions are getting worse.

"Safety is the top priority when sailing and there is no need to force yourself if weather conditions do not allow it. Keep monitoring weather information and follow the directions of the port manager at the fishing port," said Director General of Capture Fisheries KKP Lotharia Latif, quoted from an official statement, Monday, December 29.

As a precautionary measure, Latif said, the port in all fishing ports continued to increase surveillance and safety services for shipping. Starting from the delivery of the latest weather forecast information, inspection of the completeness of the ship's documents to ensure the legality of the fishing vessel before going to sea.

In addition, the port is also actively giving direct advice to fishermen regarding the use of safety equipment and the readiness of the crew of fishing vessels.

"This step is taken to minimize the risk of marine accidents, especially in the midst of uncertain weather conditions," he said.

Even though the weather is not friendly and threatens fishing activities, the KKP guarantees that the supply of fish for the community during the 2025 Christmas and 2026 New Year holidays will be maintained.

All Technical Implementation Units (UPT) of fishing ports continue to operate optimally to maintain the distribution chain. Fish stocks in cold storage and Fish Processing Units (UPI) are also monitored so that there is no shortage.

"We ensure that all UPT fisheries ports under the Directorate General of Capture Fisheries remain optimal, ranging from landing services, loading and unloading fish, business licensing administration, and ensuring that fish stocks are available in cold storage and UPI," he explained.

According to Lotharia, good services at fishing ports are the key to the smooth running of national fish fishing activities.

"In addition to supporting fishermen's productivity, excellent service also maintains the stability of fish supply and coastal community economic activities," he added.
