JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) through the Sumatra I River Basin Agency (BWS) of the Directorate General of Water Resources said that the condition of the Krueng Tiro River bank in Tiba Mesjid Village, East Mutiara District, Pidie Regency, Aceh, had decreased in stability due to the heavy flow and erosion after the late November flood.

Therefore, emergency and gradual handling was immediately carried out to prevent wider damage, especially in residential areas along the riverbanks.

"BWS Sumatera I immediately carried out handling of the reinforcement of the Krueng Tiro River bank in Tiba Mesjid Village as an effort to mitigate the risk of erosion and landslides. This step is important to maintain the stability of the river flow while protecting the community from potential subsequent disaster threats," said Head of the Sumatera I River Basin Office Asyari in his statement, Saturday, December 27.

The handling carried out includes arranging the river flow, strengthening the bank using materials according to field conditions as well as controlling the flow to reduce the speed of the water flow. All work is carried out by paying attention to technical aspects, work safety and weather conditions in the field.

The Ministry of PU emphasized that the restoration of river functions and the protection of the surrounding area are an important part of post-disaster handling efforts, especially in flood-prone and erosion-prone areas.

The handling of the Krueng Tiro River is expected to minimize the risk of environmental damage and maintain the sustainability of the river's function as a water control system.

With these handling steps, the PU Ministry hopes that the flow of the Krueng Tiro River will be more stable, the risk of disasters can be suppressed, and the safety and comfort of residents of Tiba Mesjid Village and its surroundings are maintained.

Meanwhile, Minister of PU Dody Hanggodo emphasized that emergency handling was the top priority so that people's social and economic activities could immediately resume.

"In emergency conditions like this, our focus is to open access as quickly as possible, secure the river flow and ensure that people are not isolated. The PU Ministry is moving quickly with the support of heavy equipment and cross-sector coordination so that handling can run effectively and accurately," he added.
